Been awhile since I posted anything here, so here's a wee update. Last time I posted I had recorded an episode of a book review podcast. I finally got around to recording a second episode reviewing Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War", a Hugo and Nebula award winner that has been hailed as a landmark of military science fiction. Should be up in 2 weeks, just in time for Memorial Day, I suppose.
I haven't seen "Star Trek" yet, but I've been waiting impatiently. Hell, the movie has been done for half a year now. I just wanna see it! But patience is a virtue, innit? Louisa and I are going to see it tomorrow on the closest Imax screen. I can't wait.
Work has been going well. Been getting good reviews and I've been doing weekly sessions of leadership training. Very useful. I think the best part for me, though, is that I'm seen to be a leader. I've worked hard to cultivate that part of personality. I'm so glad it's blossoming.
Happy Mothers Day, mothers! I talked to mine today (will see her this weekend). Call yours if you haven't already if you can. |

I made my debut as a panelist this week on Colin Marshall's "Barely Literate", reviewing Douglas Coupland's 1992 novel "Shampoo Planet".
I think I did an okay job, and I look forward to doing it again.
I listened to it and parts make me feel bad, though. My main mic died before the show, so I needed to record my part on the Rock Band USB mic. Next time I do the show, I'll get a better mic. You can really hear me pop when I say "p" words. Also, when called upon to recap the narrative, I used a lot of umms and such. I did a lot of growing in that hour along with that, though...but I still groan when I laugh at my own jokes, even when (and espcially when) they clunk. So sad.
But, if you have an hour and don't mind the above quirks, then you can download my episode here.

I realize that the main reason people keep a journal is to talk to themselves in the future. Like recording your memories when they're fresh so they can be replayed again.
I've said before that I don't miss being the fellow who used to post here, but I'm glad I was him so that I can now be me...if that makes any sense.
The Phillies are up 3 games to 1 in the World Series and I couldn't be happier. The last time the Phillies won the series, I was 3. I think I'll be better able to appreciate it now.
Baseball is such a father-son sport, isn't it? My brothers and I went to a Phils game last season. It was the best game I've ever watched live. The Phillies won it in extra innings on a Ryan Howard walk-off home run. I never want to forget that game.
I start a new project at work tomorrow that actually is certain to lead to a new position. Quality Control...I'll be a 9-5er Monday through Friday. And, I'll be off the phones. To new challenges.
Excelsior!

amhranai9 posted a meme that's apparently been hitting everyone, so I decided to participate.
* Grab the nearest book. * Open the book to page 56. * Find the fifth sentence. * Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions. * Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
"Nice." Not really, I think. I remember she's seen my apartment. The hardwood floord that clunked and creaked under my weight. The landlord made me put down carpeting and sign a dozen disclaimers, and practically begged me to wear a mask.Superheroes aren't popular tenants.
"Well, we're glad to have you with us. I've never worked with a cyborg before." She touches her mask, making sure it's on straight. She still has a secret identity somewhere.

As much as I want to be self-aware, sometimes I really am not. I just spend a half-hour reading some of my journal posts from 5 years ago, and I don't even recognize that person. I'm ashamed by some of the things I said and thought.
And I admit that it probably happens today, too. Louisa made me aware of that a week ago. I need to be more aware of people's feelings. Not everyone knows when I'm kidding. So, if you're out there and you've been hurt by my words, please know that I never mean to hurt anybody or to make them feel bad.. I really try to be a good person and it makes me feel bad to know that I failed. I'll try to do better in the future.

Dear LiveJournal,
I'm sorry for neglecting you. In many ways, my not posting is me contributing to my future self not remembering things. That is a shame.
Not that I've had many exciting adventures since my last post. Well, I did go to my parents shore house for a long weekend and that was nice. My mom says my dad loves having us around and that means a lot, especially since we didn't have the closest relationship growing up. It means a lot to me to have been able to feel closer to him since I moved out. Odd how that happens.
I was an acting supervisor for all of three weeks or so. I'm glad to have had the opportunity and it does bode well for future advancement, but I must admit that I was hamstrung from the beginning. I wasn't allowed to really take the ball and run with it as my supervisory powers were painfully limited. In the meeting where I was pulled off the project (through no fault of my own, they just had the opportunity to put a more experienced sup in the position for the 1 month interim period) I was told that I could have done a few more things to shine.
Which really wasn't fair because I took what he said seriously when he gave me the position. He said he only wanted me to do a certain thing and I did it well. Then I find out he wanted to see something more? When I came to him and asked him if he wanted me to do this or that, he said that he didn't want me to because he didn't want to "set me up for a fall". The mixed messages are frustrating.
Decided to do a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign for Louisa's Uncle Ed's wedding. We're supposed to design something on fabric pennants that I think will be stitched together. I've met the man twice tops in my life and I'm part of his life tapestry...literally. Hope it turns out better than the hex sign I did for her grandparents anniversary. Man, that was not pretty.
Louisa and I have become avid watchers of "Mad Men". I got the first season on Blu-Ray and we've been watching an episode or two for the last two weeks and the second season premiere was tonight. Really good show that got nominated for a slew of Emmys. It's well worth everyone's time. Go watch it.
Got Maggie and her family addicted to "Doctor Who". They quickly mowed through my season 1 box set and have now moved on to series 2. We're also watching a lot of QI with them when I go over. That's a fantastic British panel show that's more about being interesting than right. You get penalized, though, if you go for an obvious, but wrong, answer.
There's a bunch of episodes on YouTube, Stephen Fry hosts. You'll love it.
Love, Joe
